With a staff of two and a sanctuary of 25 (and growing), our animals need to be taken care of regardless of our income through programming. As with many businesses, the pandemic drastically cut our organization’s income, but expenses increased. Therefore, we are still trying to recover, rebuild and recoup. We rely mainly on program fees to cover overhead but donations are always accepted, greatly appreciated, and tax deductible.

How Funds are Used

Last year brought many expense challenges such as needing to build a new facility and needing to purchase a new animal van after Dan’s accident in fall of 2021. These expenses were added to the daily operating expenses such as food, supplies, utilities, facility lease and travel expenses.

With big animals comes big appetites! Our eaters need about $230 a week in groceries and $135 a week in rodents (frozen). That’s a big grocery bill but we only feed our animals human grade groceries (aside from the rodents) with all produce coming from Costco, Sam’s Club, Aldi, Walmart and Lidl. With such high quality food, our animals are rarely sick and our vet bills are luckily one of the smallest expenses we have.

Being an outreach program means we come to you with our animals and unfortunately gas is still on the rise. Our fuel and vehicle costs have increased to an average of $950 a month with our busiest month (July) guzzling up about $2000 in gas and our slowest month (December) sipping a modest $400 in gas.

While program fees keep us afloat, donors bring a special kind of joy and financial relief to our little sanctuary. All donations are tax deductible and all donors receive a thank you letter and receipt.

Thank you from all of the animals and their keepers at Wild Animal Encounters, Inc.
